Biodegradable and Compostable Plastic Products

Buying Biodegradable Products - Why Official Certification By The DIN Is Crucial

Apr 08 , 2021
For the American and Canadian markets, DIN CERTCO has been cooperating with the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) since December 2017 and carry out the technical assessments for certification for the BPI compostable label.

For certifications for the markets in Australia and New Zealand (Australasia) according to the AS 4736 standard, DIN CERTCO cooperates with the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) and the certification system there.

DIN CERTCO is a certification company of the TÜV Rheinland Group and the certification body for issuing the DIN mark and other certification marks. Due to its independence, neutrality, competence, and many years of experience, DIN CERTCO enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. With them make it easier for customers to choose a suitable manufacturer and supplier of products made of bioplastics on all world markets.

What Is the Difference Between These Certifications?

  1. European Standards EN 13432 / 14995 (13432 applies to package only, 14995 applies to plastics generally);
  2. The Australian standard AS 4736 which additionally includes an earthworm test;
  3. ASTM D6400 is the US standard with clear pass/fail criteria;
  4. Japan has no accepted standard, but the certification scheme GreenPla is widely used.
  5. Labels proving compostability in industrial facilities are the ABA Compostable Seedling logo, the Vinçotte OK Compost logo, the DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable Mark, and the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Compostable logo.

The two internationally recognized certification marks - the Seedling compostability mark and the DIN-Geprüft test mark for industrial compostability - are awarded based on certification programs that have been developed in cooperation with interested parties and are continuously further developed. Both are based on the DIN EN 13432 standard.

For the well-known BPI compostable label, the applicable standards are ASTM D 6400: "Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics" or ASTM D 6868 “Standard Specification for Labeling of End Items that Incorporate Plastics and Polymers as Coatings or Additives with Paper and Other Substrates Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities” based on the nature of the submitted product or material.

The basis of the certification of the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) for the Australian market is the standard AS 4736 "Biodegradable plastics - Biodegradable plastics suitable for composting and other microbial treatment"

Approved Products

The Biodegradable Products Institute has a list of products and materials that have been certified compostable according to ASTM standards. This list focuses on:

  • Compostable Trash and Produce Bags
  • Compostable Food Packaging
  • Compostable Polymers
  • Compostable Product Packaging

Why is the Biodegradable Official Certification Crucial?

There exists insufficient understanding among both consumers and organizations that the scientific classifications of the terms "compostable" & "biodegradable" mean two very different things.

Consequently, several products in the marketplace are greenwashing and misinforming consumers of their eco qualities by claiming to be compostable while they are actually only biodegradable and don't satisfy the standards of ASTM D6400 or EN13432.
